Under the non-credit English Language program, all the new applicants to the college program are required to take English Placement Test to determine their  level  of the English language proficiency.  Those who pass the English Placement Test are allowed to register as regular students enrolling for College English and other college credit courses.

Those who score below 40% will join Remedial Level I (10 units) and at the same time can take 5 credit units of regular courses. Those who score between 41-64% can enroll for Remedial II (5 units) and take 10 credit units of regular courses.

The Remedial English program consists of two levels.

Level I: Emphasizes on the eight parts of speech and basic grammar with basic 4 skills

Level II: Emphasizes on basic reading and writing, vocabulary building with basic 4 skills

Goal and Objectives

Goal: Remedial classes are designed to help students to improve their four communication skills in English Language so that they may be ready for the College English and other regular college classes.

Objectives: By taking the Remedial English courses, it is hoped that students will be able to:

  1. Understand the use of the eight parts of speech;
  2. Construct grammatically correct simple sentences;
  3. Compose proper paragraphs;
  4. Communicate in and outside the classroom in simple English.

ENGL 05 Level I        Emphasizes on eight parts of speech at its literal level with basic 4 skills

English Language Program

***There will be a combined final examination on the four skills at the end of the term for Level I and II Remedial students. Those who get 65% (C) will be eligible for ENGL 131 College

English. Or if the students at any level take the English Placement Test at its proper time and score 65%, they are regarded eligible for ENGL 131-132 College English.

 

Practical Section

                    In order to facilitate on-campus English Language

Development, the following items of activities are suggested to implement in the campus. 

  1. Encourage the use of English medium in extra-curricular activities such as morning and evening worships, social games etc.
  2. Conduct separate programs for worship services such as prayer meetings, vespers, Sabbath schools, and divine worships for  Remedial English students and all those who are interested to improve their English communication skills.
  3. Set aside certain days on which classes are conducted through English medium of instruction such as Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays.
  4. Conduct some special activities such as play (drama), coral reading, short speeches, recitation and language talent night  using English as a medium.
